It was a great afternoon to meet our fellow West Raleigh friends on the baseball diamond. The BIG Reds won 13-7 in 4 1/2 innings.

Jonah: 1-2 RBI, run scored
Christian 0-2, but moved runners into scoring position
Andrew 1-2; 2RBI, run scored
Total - 15 hits with 3 doubles.
BIG D:
Edward (3 times!), Tanner, Drew (x2), Will, Andrew, Matt (x2) and Sam all had put outs. Edward (x2), Christian and Sam caught pop flies.
Offensive Stars of the Game:
Sam - Went 2-2 with 2 Doubles and 3 RBIs and scored a run; powering the ball over the outfielder's head, clearing the bases. Great hitting!
Sticks - Gets an star of the game for his base running into home. Their catcher was completely blocking the plate, as Sticks was running home to score. Despite never going over this in practice, Sticks knew just what to do! He avoided contact, slipped around the bag and reached out to tag the base with his hand. And that was with his "bad" arm - the one that had been broken in the spring! Great heads up play to get the run!
Defensive Stars of the Game:
Matt - He had two put outs and almost had a third. On a hard hit grounder that bounced over his head, Matt stretched up and back to grab the ball in a sportscenter highlight move, then quickly threw the ball to first to try to get the runner. He almost got him, but it just wasn't quite in time - despite Sam's huge stretch to get it. Great plays Matt.
Jack - Catchers have it tough - in 90+ degree heat, they have to put shin guards, chest pads, big helmet and huge glove and wobble out to the field. They are involved in every batter of the inning, throwing the ball back to the pitcher several times per at bat. On top of all that - Coach Eric makes them run down the baseline to cover first base in certain situations, and still be aware of the rest of the runners on base who might be trying to score. Well, one such situation came up in this game - on a hard grounder to right field, Jack had run down to cover first. Andrew picked up the grounder and threw it in to the cut-off to keep the runner at third. Jack was already back at home plate in perfect position ready to receive the ball to tag the runner out if he was coming home. Their coach was smart though... he saw Jack was ready and didn't take the chance of sending the runner... he would have been out for sure! Great heads-up baseball, Jack!
