Practice #4: Cut off

Blood was drawn at least twice tonight, a couple of bad hops in an ear and on the nose.  The players shook it off and bounced back nicely.  With only a little over an hour on the field tonight the team was pushed for time and were able to cover a few situational plays for both the base runners and fielders.

Concepts the BIG Reds concentrated on during practice:
  • Focusing on the lead runner – run at him and back to the base
  • Cut-offs and plays at the plate – Thinking maybe the Pitcher or SS for the cuts. These plays would be game situational but situations like tag up with runner on 3rd or hits with runner on 2nd. We combine base running and defense by splitting up the players to run this drill.
  • Bunt coverage – C, P and 3B coverage.  We will have a good aggressive player at P than can handle most plays. 1B will stay on the bag.   This was with no one on base.  We will change that with a runner on base.
  • Balls in the gaps – Aggressive to the ball and getting it in as quick as possible.
